Japanese authorities have urged the evacuation of residents from Akusekijima, a small island in the Tokara Islands near Kagoshima Prefecture, following a series of nearly 1,600 earthquakes over a period of about two weeks. The initial evacuation call came after more than 1,000 tremors, including a strong earthquake on July 3, 2025. Authorities warned of the possibility of further quakes up to magnitude 6 and potential mudslides due to heavy rains. The island’s 89 residents were among those evacuated, with dozens leaving the southwestern Japan islands amid ongoing seismic activity. By mid-July, 16 evacuees had returned to Akusekijima, as the earthquake swarm showed no signs of stopping, though some residents remained evacuated as precautionary measures continued. The situation remains under close observation by local authorities.
