Japan's chief trade negotiator and Economy Minister Ryosei Akazawa has stated that Japan cannot accept the United States' 25% tariffs on automobiles and auto parts. Akazawa emphasized that the automobile sector is central to Japan's economy and that the tariffs are causing substantial losses to Japanese companies by negatively impacting auto exports. He warned of potential downside risks to the Japanese economy due to the remaining US tariffs. Akazawa called for the United States to reduce the tariffs on Japanese vehicles and parts to 15% as a priority measure.
