On June 17, 2025, the Tohoku Shinkansen suspended operations between Tokyo and Sendai due to a malfunction in a seven-car E8 series train undergoing inspection between Utsunomiya and Nasushiobara stations. The affected train experienced a failure in its power supply equipment, preventing acceleration and causing a halt. This disruption led to a suspension of both up and down lines on the route for approximately five and a half hours, with operations initially expected to resume around 7 p.m. but later advanced to 5 p.m. JR East connected the stalled train to the Hayabusa 17 service to remove it from the track. Subsequently, JR East found similar malfunctions in three other E8 series trainsets on the same day, totaling four incidents, involving issues with semiconductor components in the power supply devices. As a result, JR East suspended the solo operation of E8 series trains on both the Tohoku and Yamagata Shinkansen lines, leading to the cancellation of 21 services on June 18 and continued service reductions through July. The Yamagata Shinkansen implemented shuttle operations between Fukushima and Shinjo stations starting June 19, with further suspensions announced through late July. Additionally, heavy rain in early July caused temporary suspensions on the Tohoku Shinkansen between Tokyo and Sendai, and on July 10, the Tohoku and Tokaido Shinkansen lines experienced intermittent service disruptions due to flooding and soil moisture levels reaching regulatory limits. Other rail lines, including the Odakyu Odawara Line, Keio Inokashira Line, JR Saikyo Line, and JR Takasaki Line, also faced temporary suspensions caused by weather-related issues or equipment inspections during this period. JR East continues to investigate the root causes of the E8 series malfunctions, which have proven challenging to fully resolve.
