The Athletics Integrity Unit has provisionally suspended women’s marathon world-record holder Ruth Chepngetich after she tested positive for the prohibited diuretic hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ). The substance was detected in a urine sample collected on 14 March. HCTZ is classified as a masking agent that can conceal the use of other performance-enhancing drugs, the AIU said in a statement on Thursday. Chepngetich, 30, accepted a voluntary provisional suspension on 19 April while the investigation proceeded. The AIU issued a formal notice of charge and imposed its own provisional ban on 17 July. No timetable has been given for a disciplinary hearing. The Kenyan athlete shattered the women’s marathon record in Chicago last October, becoming the first woman to break 2 hours 10 minutes with a time of 2:09:56. A three-time Chicago Marathon champion and the 2019 world champion in Doha, she withdrew from this year’s London Marathon citing physical and mental fatigue. Her record and past results could now come under scrutiny depending on the outcome of the AIU process.
