Kenya’s Beatrice Chebet became the first woman to break the 14-minute barrier for 5,000 metres, clocking 13:58.06 at the Nike Prefontaine Classic in Eugene on Saturday. The 25-year-old’s time sliced 2.15 seconds off the world record of 14:00.21 set by Ethiopia’s Gudaf Tsegay in 2024, and delivered meet and Diamond League records. Chebet closed with a 61-second final lap and a blistering 28.6-second last 200 metres in midday heat at Hayward Field. Fellow Kenyan Agnes Jebet Ngetich finished second in a personal-best 14:01.29, while Tsegay settled for third in 14:04.41, her fastest of the season. The performance adds to Chebet’s résumé that already includes Olympic titles over 5,000m and 10,000m and the 10,000m world record set last year.
