Kenya's Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has approved murder charges against six individuals, including Central Police Station Officer Commanding Station (OCS) Samson Talaam, Police Constables James Mukhwana and Peter Kimani, and civilians John Gitau, Gin Abwao, and Brian Njue, in connection with the death of teacher and blogger Albert Ojwang while in police custody. The suspects have denied the charges and are expected to take plea in court. Separately, police officer Klinzy Masinde Barasa was charged with the murder of 22-year-old mask vendor Boniface Kariuki Mwangi, who was fatally shot during protests against police brutality in June 2025. Barasa has pleaded not guilty and is awaiting a bail hearing scheduled for August 19, 2025, while his colleague Duncan Kiprono was released without charges. Additionally, in the ongoing inquest into the June 18, 2024, killing of protester Rex Masai, police officer Isaiah Murangiri has denied involvement despite photographic and video evidence placing him at the scene. Former Nairobi Central Police Deputy Commanding Officer Tiberius Ekisa testified that he did not know Murangiri and denied issuing shoot-to-kill orders. A photojournalist also testified, identifying Murangiri as aggressive and hostile during the protests, including firing tear gas at demonstrators.
