Kenya’s Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions has approved a murder charge against Constable Klinzy Masinde Barasa for the fatal shooting of 22-year-old mask vendor Boniface Kariuki Mwangi on 17 June outside Imenti House in Nairobi’s central business district. The incident, captured on video and widely shared, fuelled public protests over alleged police brutality. Barasa appeared before the Milimani High Court on Thursday, where Justice Kanyi Kimondo ordered a mental assessment to determine his fitness to stand trial and remanded him to Nairobi Remand Prison. Plea taking was deferred to 28 July. A second officer, Constable Duncan Kiprono, was released after the prosecution said it lacked evidence to link him to the killing. Trial Magistrate Benmark Ekhubi closed the miscellaneous application against Kiprono, though prosecutors did not indicate whether he might testify in the forthcoming proceedings against Barasa.
