The Kenyan government has completed the placement of over 310,000 students who sat for the 2024 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exams into universities and technical colleges through the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS). Despite this, more than 42,000 qualified students have not applied for university placement, raising concerns among officials. Among those placed, nursing remains a popular course with 50,000 applicants, although only 34,000 secured placements. The government is alarmed by the high number of qualified students opting out of university education, with many reportedly preferring technical training institutions even after meeting university admission requirements. Additionally, approximately 650,000 students have shunned both universities and colleges, prompting discussions about fee reprieves and the need to address this trend.
