Kenya's Social Health Authority (SHA) has suspended 40 hospitals and revoked the licenses of 12 doctors over alleged fraud and illegal billing practices within the SHA system. Cabinet Secretary Duale confirmed that these facilities will no longer receive benefits from SHA and that the names of implicated doctors have been forwarded to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI). Meanwhile, private hospitals have begun requiring cash payments from civil servants due to SHA's failure to settle claims totaling 8.14 billion Kenyan shillings, including unpaid insurance benefits for families of public servants who died or were injured on duty. The Kenya Health Federation Chairman Dr. Kanyenje Gakombe noted that SHA has not settled claims amounting to 3 billion shillings since its inception nine months ago. This payment crisis has led to criticism from UDA lawmakers who have called out Duale for the punitive SHA payment policy. Additionally, health workers in Nairobi and other counties have gone on strike over withheld salaries and unpaid statutory deductions, causing disruptions in medical services at facilities such as Machakos Level 5 and Kangundo Level 5 hospitals. The strikes have persisted for several days, with patients left without adequate care. In related developments, Nairobi Hospital is contesting a liquidation bid over a disputed debt of 51 million shillings. Furthermore, the Eldoret High Court declared the establishment of the NHIF Pending Medical Claims Verification Committee null and void, citing constitutional violations. Moi University lecturers have also issued a seven-day strike notice over delayed payments and other grievances.
