Kenyan President William Ruto has accused unnamed senators of demanding up to KSh150 million from county governors and said some MPs pocketed about Sh10 million to pass an anti-money-laundering bill. He warned that lawmakers involved in extortion will be arrested and prosecuted. To reinforce his stance, Ruto on 18 August unveiled the Presidential Multi-Agency Team on the War Against Corruption (MAT-WAC), drawing personnel from 10 institutions, including the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations and the National Intelligence Service. The move met immediate resistance in Parliament. Legislators from both the ruling Kenya Kwanza coalition and the opposition ODM demanded that the President present evidence or appear before them. Some threatened to impeach National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula and Senate Speaker Amason Kingi if they failed to summon Ruto. On 20 August the High Court suspended MAT-WAC after a constitutional petition filed by physician Magare Gikenyi and three others argued that the President lacks authority to create an anti-corruption body parallel to the EACC. Justice Bahati Mwamuye gave the state until 29 August to respond, with a mention set for 9 September. Separately, the EACC said it has opened its own inquiry into alleged bribery within Parliament and will seek guidance from legislative leaders to identify specific lawmakers involved. The standoff leaves Ruto’s flagship anti-graft initiative on hold while political and legal battles over corruption intensify.
