Kenya’s Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen praised security forces for what he described as a disciplined and effective response to Monday’s Saba Saba demonstrations, saying police action curtailed looting and vandalism that had marred similar protests on 25 June. Authorities restricted access to Nairobi’s central business district and deployed additional officers across the capital, measures Murkomen said were necessary to safeguard lives and property. The demonstrations marked the 35th anniversary of the pro-democracy Saba Saba movement and drew crowds in Nairobi and several towns. By 6:30 p.m., the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights had documented 10 deaths, 29 injuries, two abductions and 37 arrests in 17 counties. Murkomen acknowledged public inconvenience caused by the roadblocks but insisted those responsible for any violence would be investigated and prosecuted, while reiterating citizens’ right to peaceful assembly.
