On July 7 and 8, 2025, Nairobi experienced an extensive police-enforced lockdown as authorities blocked main roads leading to the Central Business District (CBD) to curb movement during the annual Saba Saba protests. The police roadblocks and heavy security presence turned Nairobi's usually busy streets into near-empty corridors, effectively shutting down the city. The protests, which marked the anniversary of a major uprising, coincided with recent violent demonstrations across Kenya. At least 16 counties observed a tense stillness as citizens heeded calls to protest nationwide. However, unrest escalated in some areas, including Nakuru and Naivasha, where roads were blocked and passengers reportedly robbed, while counties such as Bomet, Kericho, and Kisumu remained calm. A notable incident occurred at Kitengela Sub-County Hospital, where an armed mob stormed the facility during the protests, bringing in the body of Brian Kimutai, a protester who had been shot. The mob attacked medical staff, destroyed equipment, and caused severe disruption to hospital operations. Medical workers condemned the attack and threatened to withdraw services unless adequate security is provided. Medical unions subsequently withdrew personnel from the hospital. The government has been urged to ensure protection for health facilities amid the ongoing unrest.
