A recent investigative report by NTV Kenya has highlighted the detrimental effects of agricultural chemicals on farmers in Meru, particularly in the Timau area. Over 10 individuals have died from cancer linked to pesticide exposure, with several others currently battling the disease. Long-term use of these chemicals, as in the case of farmer Charles Rutere who sprayed pesticides for 30 years, has resulted in severe health issues including loss of sensation. Families like those of Lucy Makena and Francis Marete have suffered multiple cancer cases attributed to these toxic substances. MP Gladys Boss revealed that 44% of pesticides used in Kenya are banned in Europe and other jurisdictions, raising concerns about regulatory standards. Health advocates and government officials, including Harun Warui and CS Mutahi Kagwe, have called for stricter enforcement of restrictions on the 202 pesticides listed in June to mitigate further harm. The report underscores the urgent need for government action to address the unsafe use of banned and hazardous pesticides that are turning farms into health hazards.
