Kenyan President William Ruto and opposition leader Raila Odinga led a joint parliamentary meeting on August 18, 2025, involving lawmakers from the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) and Orange Democratic Movement (ODM). The meeting aimed to discuss the implementation of a memorandum of understanding between the two parties and address corruption challenges within Parliament. President Ruto accused some MPs of extortion, alleging that a few collected 10 million Kenyan shillings to pass the Anti-Money Laundering Bill and that senators demanded bribes up to 150 million shillings, reportedly paid by a governor. He vowed to arrest and prosecute those involved. In response, many MPs demanded that Ruto present evidence to substantiate his claims and threatened to summon him to Parliament, with some lawmakers warning they might impeach the Speakers of the National Assembly and Senate if the President failed to comply. Subsequently, President Ruto established a multi-agency team on the war against corruption (MAT), comprising ten government agencies including the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), National Intelligence Service (NIS), Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), and the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), to intensify anti-graft efforts. However, the High Court suspended the operations of this multi-agency team following a petition by four activists who argued that its creation was unconstitutional and infringed upon the mandate of the EACC. The court set a hearing date for September 9, 2025. Meanwhile, the Senate scheduled plenary sessions from August 27 to 29 to hear the impeachment trial of Kericho Governor Eric Mutai, who was impeached by 33 Members of County Assembly (MCAs) last week. Mutai's trial follows the failure of a motion to form a special committee to investigate his removal. Additionally, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua returned to Kenya on August 21 after a six-week U.S. tour, with his arrival marked by tensions between his Democratic Change Party (DCP) supporters and police at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), including confrontations and disruptions on Mombasa Road. The government assured normalcy despite these incidents. The political climate remains tense amid ongoing debates over corruption allegations and governance.
