On the 35th anniversary of Saba Saba, Kenyan opposition leader Raila Odinga emphasized the historic significance of the Kamukunji Grounds in Nairobi as the sacred site of the original 1990 protests that sought to repeal Section 2A of the Constitution and enable multi-party democracy. Odinga described Saba Saba as an inclusive, democratic, and intergenerational movement involving diverse groups such as professionals, academics, trade unionists, women, and religious organizations united in the struggle for good governance. In light of ongoing youth-led protests and socio-economic challenges, Odinga proposed the formation of an "Intergenerational National Conclave" to address pressing national issues including comprehensive police reforms, accountability, and youth unemployment. He suggested that resolutions from the conclave be subjected to a national referendum. Odinga has defended this call for civic dialogue as the best path forward to national reconciliation and reform. However, his proposal has received mixed reactions. Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and People's Liberation Party leader Martha Karua have rejected the dialogue initiative, with Gachagua asserting that the country's challenges should be resolved through elections and accusing the dialogue call of being a ploy to derail the ruling coalition's agenda. Karua described dialogue with the current Kenya Kwanza administration as not an option and criticized the proposal as a cover for repression. Meanwhile, some political figures, including Musalia Mudavadi and Governor Gladys Wanga, have expressed support for dialogue as a peaceful alternative to unrest. The debate over the national dialogue continues amid Kenya’s complex political landscape. Separately, Harold Kipchumba Kimuge was sworn in as the ODM nominated Member of Parliament, replacing John Mbadi, who vacated the seat after his appointment as Treasury Cabinet Secretary.
