South Korea’s Supreme Court on 3 July confirmed a one-year prison sentence for actor Yoo Ah In, suspending its execution for two years and imposing a ₩2 million (US$1,500) fine. The ruling dismisses both the prosecution’s and the defendant’s appeals, making the penalty final. Yoo, 38, was convicted of violating the Narcotics Control Act after receiving the anaesthetic propofol 181 times between September 2020 and March 2023 and obtaining more than 1,100 sleeping-pill tablets under other people’s names on 44 occasions. Charges that he coerced others to smoke cannabis and attempted to destroy evidence were dismissed. The Seoul Central District Court had initially jailed the actor for a year in September 2024; an appellate court in February reduced the term to a suspended sentence, leading to his release after five months in detention. With the Supreme Court’s decision, the case is now closed, although any further drug offences during the suspension period could activate the custodial term.
