Federal Reserve Governor Michelle Bowman said on 19 Aug that central-bank employees should be allowed to hold “de minimis” amounts of crypto assets, arguing that personal exposure would help staff better understand the fast-growing market and sharpen supervisory skills. Bowman, who oversees bank supervision, added that strict investment limits currently imposed on Fed personnel are hampering the institution’s ability to recruit and retain examiners with expertise in digital assets. She warned that regulators and banks risk diminishing their role in the economy if they do not embrace innovations such as artificial intelligence and cryptocurrencies.
