Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill filed a lawsuit against Roblox Corp. on 14 Aug. in the state’s 21st Judicial District Court, accusing the gaming platform of enabling the distribution of child sexual-abuse material and failing to implement basic protections for its predominantly young user base. The 42-page complaint alleges that Roblox’s lack of age verification and other safeguards allows adults to pose as children, while minors can bypass controls to enter sexually explicit “experiences” such as “Escape to Epstein Island,” “Diddy Party” and “Public Bathroom Simulator Vibe.” It cites a recent Louisiana arrest in which a suspect using voice-altering software was allegedly exploiting children on the platform at the time of his detention. Murrill claims the company violated the Louisiana Unfair Trade Practices Act, acted negligently and created a public nuisance by prioritizing growth over safety. The state seeks injunctive relief to bar Roblox from promoting its safety features as adequate and to compel stronger protections, along with unspecified monetary damages. A Roblox spokesperson declined to address the specific allegations but said the company devotes “substantial resources,” including AI technology and round-the-clock human moderation, to detect and remove harmful content. The firm noted recent measures such as blocking direct messages for users under 13, while acknowledging that “no system is perfect.” Investors reacted swiftly: Roblox shares fell about 8% in morning trading on 15 Aug. as the lawsuit added to mounting scrutiny from lawmakers and parents over child safety on the platform, which reports roughly 82 million daily active users—more than two-fifths of them under the age of 12.
