Meta Platforms has reached a settlement with conservative activist Robby Starbuck, ending a defamation lawsuit that alleged the company’s artificial-intelligence chatbot falsely stated he took part in the 6 January 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol and was a “White nationalist.” Starbuck filed the case in Delaware Superior Court in April after the Llama-based system repeated similar allegations across Meta services and advised that he posed a danger to his children. Under the agreement announced on 8 August, Starbuck will serve as a consultant to Meta’s Product Policy team, working on measures to curb political bias and so-called ‘hallucinations’ in the company’s generative-AI models. The parties said the matter was resolved “to our mutual satisfaction,” but did not disclose any financial terms. The accord highlights mounting legal and reputational pressure on large technology companies to police the accuracy of their chatbots, which have drawn criticism across the industry for partisan skew and factual errors. Meta said the collaboration with Starbuck will build on recent efforts to improve the reliability of its AI products ahead of the U.S. 2026 mid-term elections.
