Vox Media’s unionized editorial employees voted on 12 June to authorize a strike if management failed to reach a new labor agreement before the existing contract expired at midnight. Roughly 90 percent of the 250-member bargaining unit, represented by the Writers Guild of America East, backed the authorization. The union had pressed for higher minimum pay, annual raises, stronger severance terms and safeguards against the misuse of artificial intelligence. Negotiators for the company and the union reached a tentative deal just hours before the strike deadline, averting a walk-out that would have affected sites such as Vox.com, The Verge and SB Nation. Union members unanimously ratified the multi-year contract on 27 June, according to the AFL-CIO. The agreement provides improved wages, AI protections and enhanced benefits, bringing the short-lived labor dispute to a close.
