The Mexican government aims for Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex) to achieve financial self-sufficiency by 2027, ending its reliance on public finances. President Claudia Sheinbaum stated that Pemex is expected to generate sufficient income to cover its debt, amortizations, and investments by that year. Currently, Pemex's debt stands at approximately $98.8 billion. The government plans to support the state oil company through the Ministry of Finance during this transition. Meanwhile, Alonso Ancira, former owner of Altos Hornos de México, is facing legal challenges for allegedly selling a scrap plant to Pemex and has ceased payments related to a reparations agreement, seeking to annul the deal from the United States. President Sheinbaum emphasized that impunity will not be tolerated in this case. Additionally, the federal government's strategy to rescue Pemex has raised concerns about increased risk exposure for Mexican development banks and has drawn criticism from opposition figures, including PRI Deputy Coordinator Rubén Moreira, who described the plan as a futile attempt to cover a crisis that cost the country 3.4 trillion pesos during the previous administration.
