Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum inaugurated the Central Ciclo Combinado Villa de Reyes in San Luis Potosí, a combined cycle power plant with a generation capacity of 437.2 megawatts and an investment of $350 million. Sheinbaum announced plans to build approximately 60 similar combined cycle plants during her six-year term, aiming to add 26,000 megawatts of electricity generation capacity through the Comisión Federal de Electricidad (CFE). She emphasized the public character of CFE, highlighting efforts to prevent its privatization and support its workforce. The CFE and the National Energy Control Center (CENACE) have assured the public of sufficient energy reserves, maintaining an average operational reserve margin of 12%, double the minimum required 6%, ensuring reliable electricity supply even during peak demand periods such as the current heat season. The Energy Secretary, Luz Elena González, detailed a short-term strategy to guarantee electricity supply during high consumption months and announced plans to add more than 29,000 megawatts over the next three years, including 6,700 megawatts from new plants between 2025 and 2027. Sheinbaum noted that the reserve margin increased from 6% in 2024 to 10% in 2025 due to improved planning. Reported power outages in some regions were attributed mainly to local transmission and distribution issues, weather events, and environmental factors rather than generation capacity. Mexico also aims to increase renewable energy to 45% of its electricity mix by 2030, supported by a $13 billion investment and 22.6 gigawatts of new capacity, which could reduce U.S. natural gas dependence and create approximately 434,000 jobs, although public-private investment restrictions may limit growth.
