The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) has launched a new initiative called Project Portero in collaboration with Mexico to combat drug trafficking along their shared border. The operation aims to dismantle networks of "guardians" who control smuggling corridors for fentanyl and methamphetamine in the southwestern border region. As part of the effort, DEA agents have begun training Mexican law enforcement to target criminal leaders operating in the border area. Federal forces have already inflicted economic damage estimated at 7.854 billion Mexican pesos on drug trafficking groups through seizures of narcotics, drug labs, and precursor chemicals in Mexican states including Sinaloa, Sonora, and Morelos. The DEA describes Project Portero as its flagship operation to disrupt cartel-controlled smuggling routes.
