The U.S. Treasury Department has imposed sanctions on three senior members and a prominent associate of the Mexican Northeast Cartel, formerly known as Los Zetas. Among those sanctioned is the Mexican rapper El Makabelico, who is accused of money laundering and acting as a front for the cartel. El Makabelico reportedly has 3.1 million monthly listeners on Spotify and allegedly shared streaming revenues with the cartel. The sanctions are part of broader U.S. efforts under the administration of President Donald Trump to combat organized crime and drug trafficking. Additionally, the U.S. government has transferred 14 Mexican inmates convicted of drug-related offenses back to Mexico to serve the remainder of their sentences, a move expected to save approximately $4 million in costs associated with their combined 96 years of incarceration. Separately, two Mexican nationals, including one with possible cartel ties, were indicted in southern Texas on foreign bribery charges, marking the first new enforcement actions under the Justice Department's renewed anticorruption efforts.
