The Jalisco state prosecutor’s office has identified a suspect and secured an arrest warrant in the killing of 28-year-old Karla Bañuelos, who was shot outside her home in the Balcones de Oblatos neighbourhood of Guadalajara in the early hours of 12 July. The attack, captured by a security camera and widely circulated online, is being investigated as feminicidio. Footage shows a man arriving in a white 2010 Chevrolet Equinox, arguing with Bañuelos and firing an AR-15–style rifle. Investigators recovered the vehicle on 14 July in the municipality of Tlajomulco de Zúñiga, but the gunman remains at large. Prosecutor Salvador González said authorities are also probing whether the suspect has links to organised crime, noting that the weapon is restricted to the military. Bañuelos’s death leaves her 12-year-old daughter without a parent and has intensified scrutiny of gender-based violence in Mexico. President Claudia Sheinbaum condemned the crime as “terrible and lamentable” and pledged federal assistance to state investigators. The case underscores a broader crisis: Jalisco recorded 10 feminicidios between January and May, while 274 women were killed nationwide in the same period, according to official data. Rights groups say the latest attack highlights the need for faster arrests and stronger measures to curb violence against women.
