Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said her administration is working with Veracruz authorities to ensure the killing of Irma Hernández Cruz “does not go unpunished.” Speaking at her daily press conference, Sheinbaum confirmed that the federal Security Cabinet and the Veracruz state prosecutor’s office are coordinating the investigation alongside Governor Rocío Nahle. Hernández, a 62-year-old retired teacher who drove a taxi for extra income, was abducted on 18 July in the municipality of Álamo Temapache. Days later a video circulated showing her kneeling and surrounded by armed men, urging fellow taxi drivers to pay extortion fees to a group calling itself the ‘Mafia Veracruzana.’ Her body was discovered on 24 July in a rural area of the same municipality, according to the state prosecutor’s office. Federal officials said initial lines of inquiry focus on a dispute between criminal groups over extortion payments in northern Veracruz. The case comes as the government rolls out a national anti-extortion strategy that includes an anonymous 089 hotline and joint federal-state intelligence units. Sheinbaum reiterated that results from the investigation will be made public and that those responsible “will be brought to justice.”
