Between August 9 and 14, 2025, Mexico City experienced unprecedented heavy rainfall, marking the most intense precipitation since 1952, with the Zócalo area recording 84.5 millimeters of rain. The storm triggered multiple alerts across the city, including purple alerts—the highest level—in the Cuauhtémoc and Álvaro Obregón boroughs, as well as red, orange, and yellow alerts in other areas. The torrential rains caused widespread flooding and inundations in major avenues, residential neighborhoods, and critical infrastructure. Notably, the Aeropuerto Internacional Benito Juárez (AICM) suspended flight operations twice due to flooding and low visibility, affecting approximately 19,500 passengers, delaying or canceling over 140 flights, and causing significant passenger congestion, especially in Terminal 2. The Metro system also suffered disruptions, including a short circuit and transformer explosion at the San Antonio Abad station on Line 2, leading to partial service suspensions and station closures. Several boroughs, particularly Cuauhtémoc, Venustiano Carranza, Gustavo A. Madero, Iztacalco, and Nezahualcóyotl, reported hundreds of homes flooded, with over 400 houses damaged and infrastructure damage such as fallen trees, a landslide in Ecatepec, and a sinkhole in Iztacalco. Authorities, including the Mexico City government led by Clara Brugada, activated emergency plans such as the Tlaloque plan, deployed personnel for drainage and cleanup operations, and urged residents to take precautions. Aeroméxico called for preventive measures to ensure airport functionality. The heavy rains continued with forecasts of more intense precipitation and possible hail through mid-August, prompting ongoing alerts and response efforts across the metropolitan area.
