During the first nine months of Claudia Sheinbaum's administration, the average daily rate of intentional homicides in Mexico City decreased by 24.5%, falling from 86.9 in September 2024 to 65.6 in June 2025, according to Marcela Figueroa, Executive Secretary of the National Public Security System (SESNSP). Between June 2018 and June 2025, Mexico experienced a 29.9% reduction in intentional homicides nationwide. Authorities have reported over 26,000 arrests related to high-impact crimes and the confiscation of more than 180 tons of drugs during Sheinbaum's tenure, with improvements attributed to intelligence and technological surveillance. In June 2025, Sinaloa surpassed Guanajuato as the state with the highest incidence of homicides. Concurrently, federal and State of Mexico authorities launched "Operación Liberación," a coordinated operation targeting extortion networks linked to the criminal group "La Familia Michoacana" across 14 municipalities in southern Estado de México. The operation involved 2,866 state and federal security personnel and resulted in seven arrests for express kidnapping with extortion purposes. Investigations identified eight individuals in leadership roles within these criminal groups responsible for finance, logistics, and distribution. Authorities also exposed extortion-related price hikes in construction materials and control over various establishments, including hardware stores, food distributors, and parcel services. The government pledged to continue these security efforts despite opposition from criminal groups.
