The claims surfaced following a report by the Israeli newspaper The Marker, which detailed that the businessmen allegedly paid the money to secure lucrative government contracts for Pegasus, a controversial surveillance software used by intelligence agencies. Peña Nieto has categorically denied the accusations, calling them "totally false," "without any basis," and damaging to his honor. He stated that contract assignments were not his responsibility and emphasized that Pegasus was acquired by multiple countries for intelligence purposes, not for spying on individuals. The Mexican Attorney General, Alejandro Gertz Manero, confirmed the opening of a formal investigation and said authorities will request cooperation and information from Israel to verify the allegations. The case has drawn political attention in Mexico, with Mexico City Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum describing the report as "quite intense."
