Mexico’s Health Secretary David Kershenobich said the country has registered 2,942 measles cases so far this year, the largest outbreak in two decades, though transmission is considered contained. Roughly 95% of infections are concentrated in the northern state of Chihuahua, with 40 additional suspected cases under review in Baja California. State and federal media report nine deaths linked to the virus. To curb further spread, the government has extended its vaccination campaign to everyone aged 1 to 49 and will inoculate migrant agricultural workers who travel between remote communities and border fields. Authorities have stockpiled 4.5 million MMR doses and will meet this week with state health officials and Pan American Health Organization advisers to review surveillance and coverage targets. Kershenobich also confirmed about 30 human cases of screwworm myiasis, an infection caused by larvae of the livestock pest. Most patients were detected in Chiapas—particularly Palenque and Tapachula—and have recovered after surgical cleansing. Officials said no fatalities have occurred and the outbreak remains localized. Separately, four pharmaceutical companies—Kener, Genbio, Alpharma BiogenTec and Neolsym—announced investments that include building Latin America’s first plasma-fractionation plant in Chalco, State of Mexico. The projects, valued at more than MXN 10 billion, aim to boost domestic production of albumin, immunoglobulins and other biologics, reinforcing the administration’s push for greater health-sector self-sufficiency.
