Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has clarified that the newly introduced biometric CURP (Clave Única de Registro de Población) will not replace or require access to the electoral roll or nominal list maintained by the Instituto Nacional Electoral (INE). Sheinbaum emphasized that the use of biometric data for the new CURP will be voluntary and that there is no legal provision mandating the transfer or use of the INE's electoral register for this purpose. The government has not requested the electoral roll data from the INE, and the electoral roll remains autonomous and inalienable. The biometric CURP, which will become an official mandatory identification document, will include fingerprints, iris scans, a photo, and a digital signature. The decree establishing this new standard was published in the Diario Oficial de la Federación. While the biometric CURP is expected to become the primary form of official identification, the INE credential will continue to be valid. The government has committed to collaborating with the INE on security matters related to this initiative.
