Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has clarified that the newly introduced biometric version of the Clave Única de Registro de Población (CURP) will neither replace the electoral roll nor the nominal list managed by the National Electoral Institute (INE). Sheinbaum emphasized that the government has not requested electoral data from INE for the biometric CURP, and such a request is not stipulated in current law. The biometric CURP, which includes fingerprint and iris scans, will be voluntary and free of charge. While no one is obligated to provide biometric data, Sheinbaum encouraged registration, highlighting its potential to assist in cases involving missing persons. The biometric CURP is expected to be valid starting in October 2025. Arturo Arce Vargas, head of the National Population Registry, also confirmed the non-mandatory nature of the biometric CURP. The Secretary of the Interior, Rosa Icela Rodríguez, reiterated that the electoral roll will not be requested for this process.
