Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has denied that the government has any information regarding alleged espionage by the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) against DEA agents in the United States during the 2024 trial of Rubén Oseguera González, also known as "El Menchito." Sheinbaum emphasized that organized crime exists both in Mexico and the U.S., but the Mexican government does not possess evidence of CJNG surveillance on DEA personnel. In addition, following the approval of the new Telecommunications and Broadcasting Law by the Chamber of Deputies, Sheinbaum rejected accusations from opposition lawmakers that the government intends to conduct espionage or censorship. She clarified that the Constitution protects the privacy of communications, which can only be legally intercepted with a judicial order in specific cases. Sheinbaum described claims of a "spy state" as false and reiterated that the new law aims to strengthen the government's capabilities in investigation and intelligence without infringing on citizens' privacy.
