Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said on Tuesday that 14 Mexican citizens are being held at the newly opened “Alligator Alcatraz” detention center about 60 kilometers west of Miami and that her government has asked Washington to deport them to Mexico immediately. A diplomatic note has already been delivered and consular staff are in contact with U.S. authorities, she told reporters at her daily press briefing. Sheinbaum added that Mexican consulates are investigating whether the detainees’ rights are being violated. Juan Sabines Guerrero, Mexico’s consul in Orlando, said two of those held — brothers detained on 7 July after a traffic stop — have yet to receive case numbers or access to federal immigration proceedings because the facility is state-run. Mexico has retained legal counsel for the pair and is pressing for full legal access for all 14 nationals, he said. Alligator Alcatraz began operating in early July on an abandoned airstrip and is designed to hold up to 5,000 migrants under the Trump administration’s expanded enforcement drive. Human-rights groups have criticized the remote location and conditions at the site, warning that detainees face limited oversight and heightened risks of abuse.
