A severe thunderstorm over Mexico City forced officials to delay the Liga MX Apertura 2025 match between Club América and Querétaro at Estadio Ciudad de los Deportes on Saturday night. The kickoff, originally scheduled for 19:00, was pushed back more than an hour after lightning and torrential rain prompted a safety inspection by Protección Civil. Play eventually began at about 20:30 local time, and América seized the initiative early. Home-grown forward Dagoberto Espinoza put the hosts ahead in the 30th minute with a low drive from just outside the box, giving the defending champions a 1–0 lead at the interval. Querétaro’s task grew harder six minutes after the restart when defender Eduardo Armenta was shown a straight red card for a high challenge, leaving the visitors with ten men. With the match still in progress around the 80-minute mark, América continued to press for a second goal while holding a narrow advantage.
