The Instruction Section of the Mexican Chamber of Deputies is reviewing a second request to lift the immunity (desafuero) of Alejandro Moreno, the national leader of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) and former governor of Campeche (2015–2019), on allegations of embezzlement during his governorship. On August 1, the Instruction Section unanimously dismissed the first desafuero request filed by the Campeche government. Moreno has denounced the proceedings as a "brutal political persecution" orchestrated by the ruling Morena party, accusing them of using prosecutorial powers to intimidate opposition and divert attention from alleged pacts with organized crime. Morena's president, Claudia Sheinbaum, criticized Moreno for threatening to report President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) and other Morena officials to the FBI and DEA, labeling Moreno a "vendepatrias" (traitor). Meanwhile, the Instruction Section officially received the new desafuero request from the Campeche Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office. Ricardo Monreal, a legislator, confirmed that the Instruction Section will analyze this latest petition and supported Sheinbaum's remarks. Moreno stated that he has won all legal battles so far and accused the Campeche government of fabricating charges against him. Additionally, unrelated political developments include Morena senator Verónica Camino Farjat expressing her intention to seek the Senate presidency, and PAN deputy Germán Martínez Cázares challenging the Tabasco government to request the desafuero of Morena's Adán Augusto due to alleged links to organized crime.
