The United States on Thursday unsealed federal indictments against five senior members of Carteles Unidos and offered rewards of up to US$10 million for information leading to their arrest and conviction. The top bounty targets Juan José Farías Álvarez, known as “El Abuelo,” who prosecutors identify as the head of the Michoacán-based trafficking alliance. Rewards of US$5 million each are posted for Nicolás Sierra Santana, alias “El Gordo,” and Alfonso Fernández Magallón, alias “Poncho,” while Luis Enrique Barragán Chávez (“Wicho”) and Edgar Orozco Cabadas (“El Kamoni”) carry offers of US$3 million apiece. Attorney General Pamela Bondi said the charges aim “to dismantle the United Cartels and bring their leaders to justice for unleashing death and destruction on American citizens.” The Justice Department alleges the group ships methamphetamine, fentanyl and cocaine into the United States and uses proceeds to purchase heavy weapons, bribe officials and hire mercenaries. In a coordinated move, the Treasury Department imposed sanctions on the named cartel leaders and on members of the allied gang Los Viagras, blocking their access to the U.S. financial system. The State Department had already designated Carteles Unidos a foreign terrorist organization in February, expanding the government’s legal tools against the network. Thursday’s announcement follows Mexico’s transfer this week of 26 criminal fugitives to U.S. custody, part of increased bilateral cooperation on counter-narcotics enforcement since President Donald Trump returned to office in January.
