The 57-member Organization of Islamic Cooperation closed a ministerial meeting on 25 August with a statement condemning Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s talk of a “greater Israel” and any plan to fully occupy Gaza or forcibly relocate its population. The bloc also denounced the recent killing of journalists in the enclave and urged the United Nations Security Council to hold an emergency session on what it described as continuing Israeli aggression. In a joint news conference in El Alamein on 28 August, Egypt’s Foreign Minister Badr Abdel Aty and Qatar’s Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani said Israel has not responded to an Egypt-Qatar cease-fire and hostage-exchange proposal that Hamas accepted last week. The draft deal would halt fighting for 60 days and is “about 98 percent” aligned with Israel’s own demands, according to the mediators. The two ministers accused Israel of stalling and warned that the use of food aid as leverage is driving famine in Gaza. They called on the United States, members of the Security Council and other governments to increase pressure on Jerusalem, while reiterating their opposition to any forced displacement of Gaza’s 2.2 million residents. Separately, Cairo and Doha said they are advancing a $7.5 billion Qatari direct-investment package agreed in April, underscoring their broader economic partnership. Both governments stressed that the funding initiative will proceed in parallel with, and not at the expense of, their mediation to end the Gaza war.
