Israeli actress Gal Gadot said in a 16 August television interview that Disney’s live-action remake of “Snow White” struggled at the box office because of “pressure on celebrities to speak out against Israel” following the 7 October 2023 Hamas attack. Gadot, who served in the Israel Defense Forces, told Israel’s “The A Talks” she had expected the film to be a hit but believes criticism of her pro-Israel stance “greatly affected” audience turnout. The picture, released on 21 March 2025, cost an estimated $269-270 million to make and earned just $205.7 million worldwide, leaving Disney with a loss of roughly $115 million. It opened to $43 million domestically and finished with $87 million in North America. Review aggregation site Rotten Tomatoes recorded a 38 percent critics score, underscoring weak word-of-mouth. Beyond geopolitical tensions, the production faced criticism over its casting, the use of CGI rather than actors with dwarfism, and negative early reviews. Co-star Rachel Zegler’s social-media support for Palestinians prompted boycott calls and regional bans, adding to the hostile publicity surrounding the release. A day after the interview aired, Gadot used Instagram to clarify her remarks, acknowledging that “many factors” determine a film’s success and conceding that anti-Israel sentiment was not the sole reason for the underperformance. The episode highlights how the Israel-Gaza conflict continues to shape Hollywood discourse and commercial outcomes.
