Walt Disney Co. and its Lucasfilm unit have reached an undisclosed settlement with actress Gina Carano, ending her federal lawsuit that accused the companies of wrongful termination and sex discrimination after she was dropped from the hit Disney+ series “The Mandalorian.” A joint filing on 7 August asked a California judge to dismiss the case with prejudice, closing the matter more than a year before a scheduled February trial. Carano, who portrayed rebel marshal Cara Dune, was fired in 2021 following social-media posts that Disney called “abhorrent and unacceptable” for denigrating people on cultural and religious grounds. Backed by Elon Musk’s social-media platform X, she sued in February 2024, seeking at least $75,000 in damages and a chance to be recast, arguing that male colleagues who voiced political views were not penalized. Disney countered that it had a First Amendment right to distance its brand from the actress’s views. In Thursday’s statement, Lucasfilm said Carano had been “well respected” on set and that the studio hopes “to identify opportunities to work together with Ms. Carano in the near future.” Carano called the agreement “the best outcome for all parties involved” in a post on X and thanked Musk for underwriting her legal costs. The confidential settlement removes a prominent flash-point in Disney’s recent battles over political speech while leaving open the possibility that Carano could return to the Star Wars franchise.
