Indonesia has announced plans to allocate a medical facility on Galang Island, near Sumatra and south of Singapore, to treat up to 2,000 wounded residents from Gaza and provide temporary shelter for their families. The island, part of Batam, was selected due to its comprehensive facilities, including a hospital previously used during the Covid-19 pandemic, and its experience in hosting refugees. The Indonesian government is also preparing additional locations for the medical treatment of Gaza residents. The provincial government of the Riau Islands has reported no public opposition to the plan. President Prabowo Subianto is spearheading the initiative, which includes setting up a specialized infectious disease hospital on Galang Island to accommodate war victims from Gaza. However, the plan has faced criticism from various quarters, including Muhammadiyah, which suggested the initiative could benefit Israel and the United States, as well as from academic and political figures. Meanwhile, unrelated to the Gaza plan but occurring concurrently, Joao Angelo resigned as CEO of Agrinas Pangan Nusantara, a state-owned enterprise, citing his inability to contribute effectively. His departure has been described as a serious issue, given his close ties to President Prabowo.
"Pengunduran ini bentuk tanggung jawab saya. Saya malu memimpin enam bulan dan tak bisa berkontribusi," ucap Joao secara terbuka. Baca di sini: https://t.co/6oqL6bPsg5 ~TA #JoaoMota #BUMN https://t.co/9jaMdyFEch
