Shia Muslims in Iran and around the world commemorated Tasu'a on Saturday, the ninth day of the lunar month of Muharram that precedes the anniversary of Imam Hossein’s martyrdom. Processions, chest-beating rituals and recitations of elegies filled streets, mosques and religious centers nationwide. State media showed newly inaugurated President Masoud Pezeshkian joining mourners in Tabriz, the capital of East Azerbaijan province, where he walked with local religious groups at the provincial governor’s compound. The appearance was one of his first major public events since taking office earlier this week. Mehr News reported that Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, attended an evening ceremony at Tehran’s Imam Khomeini Hosseiniyah despite what the outlet described as recent threats against senior officials. Security was visibly tight around major venues, although authorities did not detail the nature of the threats. Beyond Iran’s borders, millions of pilgrims converged on the holy city of Karbala in Iraq, where the shrines of Imam Hossein and his half-brother Abbas are located. Local officials there described the turnout as among the largest in recent years, underscoring the enduring regional significance of the annual mourning rites.
