Al-Jazeera journalist Anas Al-Sharif was deliberately targeted by Israel to silence what is left of Palestinian-led journalism in Gaza, writes Mohamed Duar: https://t.co/rYx3kodUbX
Two Palestinian journalists have been killed this month while covering Israel’s military operations in Gaza, underscoring mounting concerns over the safety of local reporters. Al-Jazeera correspondent Anas al-Sharif died on 10 August when an Israeli airstrike hit a tent used by media workers near Gaza City’s al-Shifa Hospital. The Israeli military later said the strike targeted a Hamas operative, but has not provided evidence acceptable to independent monitors. On 24 August, Khaled Mohammad Al-Madhoon, a cameraman for Palestine TV, was shot dead by Israeli forces while filming the army’s fire on civilians seeking aid at the Zikim crossing in northern Gaza, according to the station and eyewitness accounts. Press-freedom group Committee to Protect Journalists says 2024 was already the deadliest year on record for media workers, and the pattern has continued into 2025, making the current conflict the most lethal for journalists in modern history. CPJ, UN experts and human-rights organisations are calling for independent investigations and stronger measures to protect reporters, who are classified as civilians under international law.
