Israeli airstrikes and gunfire killed at least 33 Palestinians in Gaza on Saturday, local hospitals said, striking tents sheltering displaced families in Khan Younis and crowds searching for food near the Zikim crossing. The violence came one day after the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification formally declared that famine is under way in Gaza City. A day later, troops opened fire on Palestinians moving through a military zone toward an aid distribution site in the Netzarim corridor south of Gaza City, killing four people, according to Al-Awda Hospital and eyewitnesses. Gaza’s Health Ministry separately reported eight additional malnutrition-related deaths, raising the famine toll to 289, including 115 children. The ministry estimates that 62,686 Palestinians have been killed since the war began in October 2023, with about half of the victims women and children. More than 2,000 people have died and 13,500 have been wounded while attempting to reach aid convoys or distribution points, it added. The IPC warns that famine could spread from Gaza City to Deir al-Balah and Khan Younis by late September, threatening nearly half a million residents. Aid agencies blame prolonged Israeli restrictions on food and medical supplies; Israel contests the hunger assessments and says Hamas diverts assistance. Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said the military will press ahead with plans to seize Gaza City and will “act with full force” unless Hamas accepts Israel’s terms for ending the conflict and releasing the remaining hostages. The Israel Defense Forces reported expanded operations around Jabaliya and the Netzarim corridor, while cease-fire mediation by the United States, Egypt and Qatar remains on hold.
