Salah Presses UEFA Over Death of ‘Palestinian Pelé’ in Gaza
Palestinian football star Suleiman al-Obeid, celebrated as the “Palestinian Pelé,” was killed on 6 August while waiting for food aid in southern Gaza, the Palestinian Football Association said. Family members told Reuters the 41-year-old was struck by an Israeli tank shell as he queued at a distribution point, having lost his home earlier in the war. Al-Obeid scored more than 100 goals in domestic competitions and earned 24 caps for the national side during a two-decade career. Europe’s football authority UEFA posted a tribute on 8 August calling al-Obeid “a talent who gave hope to countless children,” but did not mention how he died. Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah publicly challenged the omission the following day, writing, “Can you tell us how he died, where, and why?” UEFA has not responded, while an Israeli military spokesman said the army had “no records of any incidents involving Suleiman al-Obeid” and requested further details. The episode has intensified scrutiny of the mounting toll on Palestinian sport. The Palestinian Football Association says at least 321 players, coaches and officials have been killed since October 2023, and it continues to urge international bodies—including FIFA and UEFA—to address the risks facing athletes and to recognise the circumstances of al-Obeid’s death.
