German second-division side Fortuna Düsseldorf has abandoned plans to sign Israeli striker Shon Weissman after fans objected to his past social-media posts calling to “wipe Gaza off the map” and “drop 200 tons of bombs” on the territory. The 29-year-old, who has 33 Israel caps, had travelled to Düsseldorf and completed a medical ahead of a proposed transfer from Spain’s Granada CF. The posts, written shortly after the 7 October 2023 Hamas attacks, were deleted and Weissman later apologised, saying he had reacted “in the heat of the moment.” Nevertheless, supporters launched an online petition condemning the remarks as incompatible with the club’s values. Local paper Bild reported that Fortuna and the player had drafted an apology to be released once the signing was official, but the plan was overtaken by a wave of fan protests. In a brief statement on 5 August, the club said it had “looked into Shon Weissman intensively, but ultimately decided not to sign him.” The episode underscores the influence of supporters under German football’s 50+1 ownership rule, which gives members a decisive voice in club decisions.
