Stephen Abdikareem Munyakho, a 51-year-old Kenyan, returned to Kenya on July 29, 2025, after spending 14 years on death row in Saudi Arabia. Munyakho had been imprisoned following a conviction related to the death of a coworker during a fight, which he described as a mistake. His death sentence was overturned after a global Muslim coalition paid blood money amounting to 129 million Kenyan shillings, securing his release. Upon arrival at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi, Munyakho was warmly reunited with his family, including his mother Dorothy Kweyu. He expressed gratitude to the Kenyan government and citizens for their support and prayers throughout his ordeal. Munyakho is now adjusting to life back in Kenya after more than a decade in prison abroad. The case highlights ongoing concerns about Kenyans facing execution overseas, with political figures noting that around 1,000 Kenyans remain in similar situations.
