Yemeni authorities in Houthi-controlled Sanaa have postponed the execution of Indian nurse Nimisha Priya, which had been scheduled for 16 July. The decision, confirmed on 15 July by officials familiar with the talks, gives Priya’s family and negotiators additional time to seek a settlement with the relatives of the victim. Priya, 37, was convicted in 2018 of murdering her Yemeni business partner, Talal Abdo Mahdi, whom she allegedly tried to sedate in July 2017 while attempting to retrieve her confiscated passport. A trial court sentenced her to death, a verdict later upheld by higher courts, and her final appeal was rejected in 2023. New Delhi has no diplomatic presence in Yemen, but the Indian Embassy in Riyadh and community groups have been in regular contact with jail and prosecutorial officials. On 14 July the Government of India told the Supreme Court it had ‘reached the limit’ of formal intervention. The Court, which agreed to hear an NGO’s plea for diplomatic action, will take up the matter again on 18 July. Last-minute outreach by India’s Grand Mufti, Kanthapuram A.P. Aboobacker Musliyar, and Yemeni Sufi scholar Sheikh Habib Omar bin Hafiz helped secure the reprieve. Negotiators have offered Mahdi’s family about US$1 million in diyah, or blood money, under Sharia law, but the relatives have so far insisted on retributive justice. No new execution date has been announced.
