President Donald Trump said he expects a “conclusive ending” to Israel’s war in Gaza within the next two to three weeks, telling reporters the fighting “has to end” while cautioning that “people can’t forget October 7.” Hours after the remarks, U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff told Fox News that Trump will chair a large meeting at the White House on Wednesday to discuss a comprehensive American plan for humanitarian assistance and governance in Gaza once hostilities cease. Witkoff described the initiative as a “very robust” day-after strategy but did not disclose participants or further details. The envoy added that Washington believes outstanding issues with Hamas can be resolved before the end of the year and said Israel remains engaged in talks over hostages and security arrangements. Secretary of State Marco Rubio is scheduled to meet Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar in Washington the same day. The Gaza war erupted in October 2023 after Hamas killed about 1,219 people in Israel and abducted roughly 250 others, according to Israeli figures. Israel’s subsequent offensive has left at least 62,819 Palestinians dead, Gaza’s health ministry says. Earlier this year Trump floated the idea of U.S. stewardship of Gaza and large-scale reconstruction, a proposal welcomed by Israel but criticized by Arab and European governments.
Trump has said he expects Israel’s war in Gaza to conclude within two to three days, a claim that US officials have echoed for months, even as they provided Israel with billions of dollars in weapons and diplomatic support to cover the genocide. https://t.co/5RkyMcMCE8
