Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan used a session of the 17th BRICS leaders’ summit in Rio de Janeiro to warn that Israel’s ongoing military campaign in Gaza has already undone decades of development across the Middle East and could generate worldwide repercussions if left unchecked. Addressing a panel on multilateralism, economic-financial affairs and artificial intelligence, Fidan said the conflict has become a “serious crisis for the legitimacy” of institutions responsible for safeguarding international peace and security. He cautioned that global interdependencies—particularly in energy and critical-minerals supply chains—heighten the risk of broader instability stemming from the war. Fidan added that Ankara is ready to support efforts aimed at de-escalation and a lasting political settlement. He also urged stronger global governance of artificial intelligence, arguing that emerging technologies must not become tools of domination as the international system moves toward greater multipolarity.
